PERSONAL HEALTH SYLLABUS

COURSE: PERSONAL HEALTH TEACHER: Ms. Cordray

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Personal Health is a class that will provide students with knowledge
and skills to maintain, reinforce and enhance health. Students will learn health-related skills so that they
can develop and adopt health attitudes and practices that are conducive to good health and that promote
wellness, health maintenance, and disease prevention.

TEXTBOOK: Students will use 2 textbooks in class: HEALTH AND WELLNESS and A TEEN’S GUIDE TO SE XUAL ITY. The HEALTH AND W ELLNESS textbook is also available online (see instructions below). However, if you would like a book to have at home you may check out a textbook with the Assistant Principal. If the book is lost and/or damaged the cost of replacing the book is $58.93.

CREDITS : This is a quarter class. Students will receive ½ credit for successfully passing the class with a minimum grade of 60 AND meeting the state attendance requirements. Students must be in class 43 of the 45 days.

MATERIALS : Each student must have a notebook for completing homework and classwork assignments and for taking class notes. Students MUST come to class each day with the notebook and a pen or pencil. (Blue or black ink.) 

STATE STANDARDS: Academic Standards
The academic standards describe what students should know and be able to do.
Standard 1 is the traditional content and knowledge. Standards 2 through 8 have skill
emphasis.
Standard 1: The student will comprehend concepts related to health promotion to enhance health.
Standard 2: The student will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media,
technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
Standard 3: The student will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and
products and services to enhance health.
Standard 4: The student will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 5: The student will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to
enhance health.
Standard 6: The student will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
Standard 7: The student will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing
behaviors and to avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 8: The student will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and consumer health.

South Carolina approaches the teaching of each of the eight national standards on
the basis of six content areas:
1. Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
2. Growth, Development, and Sexual Health and Responsibility
3. Injury Prevention and Safety
4. Mental, Emotional, and Social Health
5. Personal and Community Health and Wellness
6. Physical Activity and Nutrition

INSTRUCTIONAL UNITS:
Week 1: Introduction to health , health skills, influences on health, risk factors, health goals 2020.
Week 2: Health goals, decision-making, media influence,health advocates
Decision Making, Media Influence,. advertising
Week 3:  
Mental and Emotional Health, family and social health, body systems and diseases
Weeks 4 and 5  Reproductive Health
Week 6  Nutrition and Exercise
Week 7  Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
Week 8  Injury Prevention
Week 9  Diseases, consumer and community health

We will cover these units, but the order may change.

Evaluation and Assessment: Students will be evaluated both formally and informally.
Tests and projects will be given on specific topics and chapters. Class activities will be collected and graded daily and students will maintain a notebook of all written activities. In addition, students will receive a grade for their participation, homework, and application of skills and materials presented in class. The daily grades will be determined by the following categories and weights:
Tests/projects: 40%
Classwork/participation: 35%
Homework: 10%
Application of skills 10%
Notebook 5%

ATTENDANCE AND MAKEUP WORK: Students are expected to be in class everyday. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to contact me when you return for your missed work.  All missed/makeup work should be completed within 3 class periods.

TUTORING: I will be available after school from 3:35 until 4:35 every Monday if you need additional
assistance or have to make up tests and/or assignments.
